To The Greatest Man In My Life

Me and my father have this very odd connection. We’re really not that close, compared to his relationship with my siblings. And there are times that I do get jealous, wishing I can be the son he wanted. But then, I’m not and there’s nothing I can do to reverse such a tragedy. But nonetheless, father did learn to love me. He’s slowly starting to embrace the bizarre side of my being. Our relationships not exactly perfect, but we do see eye to eye most of the time. And as we’re both getting older, we’ve learned that there’s no such thing as too late. That there’s always a place and time to pick up all the pieces and mend what was once broken. Thanks for reaching out, Pops. And this may sound unmanly, but I do love you for that quirky guy that you are…

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle’s flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it … DAD

  1. i haven’t shared this blog with him, joy. although mom and the rest of the family knows. di mo na itatanong, dad’s quite a serious guy. baka batukan lang ako non pag nabasa nya eto, heheheh 😀

  2. Hello Nell . . . that’s such a beautiful post about your father. Don’t let that part of you bring jealousy between you and your father. No matter what, you will always be the son, his son. From what I’ve gathered these past few months via your blog, you have a very loving relationship with both of your parents which I admire about you. As mentioned, I hope that my own children when they “come of age” (adults that is), they’ll continue to have a loving and trusting relationship with the hubs and I . . . just like you have with your own parents. Ayyy Nell . . . ikaw talaga . . . you always somehow bring the “dramatic” side of me. Ha! Ha! P.S. You don’t have to share your blog, but what you can do is do a nice picture of the two of you with the “poem” above. You can frame the photo and have the poem nicely printed next to it. It’ll be a nice Father’s Day gift, or just a “gift” just because.
    Ciao for now . . . take care and God bless . . . . Lulu 😉

  3. What a nice post, Nell, I’m sure your dad will be touched by it. Although, like all fathers, most likely he won’t show it to you because “cho-mach” siya. Ehem, no tears please.

  4. hi lulu, im so glad you like this entry. paminsan minsan lang naman kong mag-jelly ang beauty ko, hehehe. tsaka kahit naman anong mangyari eh love ko naman always and forever ang parents ko. i call them almost everyday from the ofc, to check if they’re behaving themselves. hahahah! oh don’t you worry dear, your kids will be the same loving children you have now and always. tama bang sabayan mo ako sa pagdradrama, hahahaha. kidding aside, i really like the suggestion you made. pero nahihiya akong ibigay kay dad. kasi di mahilig sa mga senti stuff yon eh, hehehe. maybe come fathers day, we’ll do that along with my siblings. thanks so much for your kind comment hah. you take care as well, mwaaah 😀

  5. you’re absolute right, keith. my dad is one of those guys who dare not show there emotions in public or even sa face nalang. tsaka ayaw non ng kadramahan, pwede pa sana kong action yan. hahahah! dad’s one those pa cho-mach effect, but i love him just the same 😉

  6. Oo nga baka batukan ka pa ni Tito *lol* pero I’m sure sabay kikiligin yun, wanna bet? ha ha ha!

sweet mo naman, talaga…kaya lab kita eh! (btw will send you the horse’s image via email..resize ko lang muna, ang laki bmp kasi eh)

  7. i love yah, i love yah, i love yah sister thess. thanks in advance for kindly sharing your masterpiece. promise, display ko sya either here at home or sa ofc. i’m just so fascinated by horses talaga (and cats, kakalmutin ako ng mga alaga ko pag naklimutan ko silang i-mention. hehehe!) and that specific photo you took.

and speaking of daddy pops, for sure babatukan ako non. militar kasi kaya ayaw ng drama, hehehe. hopefully, mabasa nya eto. so he knows what’s inside my heart, naku ang drama ko talaga, ever!

thanks so much again sis thess, big warm hugs and kisses from me to you. take care and love yah always, mwaaah

  8. I do agree with Joy – your dad absolutely needs to read this post (even in the privacy of his bedroom man lang – in case ma-teary-eyed sya! 😉 ). You are definitely so blessed to have each other despite your many differences.

  9. am sure your dad would know about this, too 😀 minsan mahirap din to show our feelings e pero since you have started to opened up, am sure it would be better. ako rin e, tatay ko hindi yan marunong mag sabi ng i love you — so ang ginagawa ko i ask my girls to throw him i love yous, ayun, marininig mo na he’s now saying those words back… pero sa amin, ngingiti lang yan kapag narinig nya ang i love you.

  10. hello pinky, medyo napaisip ako how to let dad know that i have this entry about him. hehehe! maybe i’ll ask my sis na mag segway ng kwento kay pops, maybe he’ll read my blog. as for the teary eye moment, naku ewan ko lang if that it will ever happen. and speaking blessings, i consider family as the greatest blessing there is. life would be so dull and meaningless with out them. dba 😉

  11. hi ms kengkay, hopefully dad gets to read this entry. medyo galit kasi sa technology ang tatay ko eh, he does a pc pero excel and word lang ang ginagamit, hehehe. buti nga father mo may smile pa, ang dad ko kahit smile eh sobrang rare pa. i’m serious, he barely smiles. mga once or twice a year lang siguro, kaloka dba? mga tatay talaga, minsan eh di natin maintindihan. pero like i said, kahit weird sila minsan eh syempre love pa rin natin sila ever 😀

  12. thanks bangge. i so love the entry you did on you dad, sobrang touching din yon ah. btw, how’s your knee doing? i hope you found a specialist to check on your leg. well wishes to you my dear. mwaaah 🙂

  13. my dad has never been the expressive kind. nung bata kami hindi mo yan maririnigan ng i love you, or magbigay man lang ng hug. pero minsan, ginawaan ko siya ng “tribute” isang father’s day. pinabasa ng sis ko sa dad ko, pinagtawanan ba naman si daddy ng sis ko kasi natameme daw at na-touch, hahaha! bastos no? 😀

anyway, i think nagme-melow na sila and unti-unti na nila tinatanggal yung macho facade nila kasi malalaki na tayo at alam nila na alam natin na hindi na aandar ang pagka-macho nila sa atin hehe. ako naman, i so enjoy my dad’s quirkiness. idol nun si joey de leon kaya korni siya hehehe. i actually think i got whatever wit i have from him 🙂

thank you for this entry, naisip ko tuloy dad ko. i loved it. 🙂

  14. hi meeya dear, at least nga dad mo eh tumatawa or nagpapatawa pa. my dad, ewan ko ba. nong naghasik ang langit ng pagsesryoso eh nasalo yata nya lahat. but in fairness to dad, he’s a good father and a wonderful provider. i remember when i graduated from the university, he asked me how much i owe for my school and he paid it all off for me. that was his graduation gift, sweet noh? di nga lang nagpapahalata, hehehe.

i guess we do inherit some attributes from our parents, like in my case people say carbon copy raw ako ng dad ko. and pati pagiging prangka at sarcastic minsan eh nakuha ko raw kay dad. without us knowing, may nakukuha pala talaga tayo sa kanila. and it’s true what you said, they tend to mellow down. kahit paano eh dad spends more time with us and his grandchildren. and he never misses a birthday ng mga apo nya, unlike when we were kids eh late sya lagi. heheheh! i guess age has it’s own pro’s and con’s, hahahah. thanks for your kind comment sis, glad you like this entry 😉

  15. So sweet – luv that picture of the shadows too – very apt 🙂

I wish someday my kids will acknowledge like what you did to your dad 🙂

  16. thanks bw. i’m sure that when your kids are older, they’ll look back and say — you guys are wonderful parents 😉 enjoy your week end 😀

  17. i agree with what you said nell, it’s never “too late”! 😀 i was blessed to have such a wonderful relationship with my parents kaya lang sandaling time lang ang binigay sa amin ng dad ko. kaya sometimes, when i read about your posts about your dad suddenly appearing at your doorstep and inviting you to go to the grocery and later on cooking for you, i wonder what sweet surprises my dad would have come up with. hee hee hee! i love this tribute of yours to your dad. that’s a very beautiful poem. 🙂 mmmwah!

  18. hello weng. allow me to share this lines from one of my fave songs — it’s not how long we held each others hand, what matters is how much we love each other… what matters most is that we loved at all. it’s really not the quantity, my dearest friend. but the quality time you’ve spent with your love ones. dba? kaya smile and hold those priceless memories close to your heart. thanks for your kind comment, glad you like the poem. love yah lots and big warm hugs to you, mwaaah 😀
